About Laser Treatment
Lasers have been used in dermatology for around 50 years now and have evolved over the years in order to reduce the possible side effects and at the same time improve the safety, efficacy, and precision of treatment options.
Laser technology is useful in dermatology because these emissions have the power to go deeper into the skin to cause more than a transient effect.
Currently the ‘Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser’ is the most efficient and safe laser device used for treatments of the various skin diseases, conditions, and improvements.
Benefits
Laser treatments are relatively less painful and most of the time painless.
The treatment time is usually short.
Since the pulses have the capacity to go deeper into the skin in the form of light, they are far more effective ways of treatment as compared to abrasive or chemically driven methods.
Being a non–invasive method, healing of the skin is usually faster.
Various types of skin conditions such as tattoo removal, pigmentation, scars, freckles, acne, and conditions like psoriasis and vitiligo can be effectively treated using laser technology.
Cosmetic procedures such as skin rejuvenation and facial and body hair reduction also can be safely and effectively addressed using laser techniques.
Procedure
Depending on the treatment requirement of your particular condition, your dermatologist may prescribe a laser treatment.
The common procedure starts with cleansing the facial or the affected skin. If on the facial skin, protective goggles are put on. The dermatologist will now use the laser device to emit pulses over the affected area several times till the session is deemed complete.
You may be able to achieve the desired result in one sitting or may have to take several sessions in order to do so. Hollywood peel gives dramatic results in one sitting whereas hair reduction or tattoo removal may need multiple sessions. On the other hand, conditions like psoriasis and vitiligo will require repeated sessions as and when required.
Please consult your dermatologist on the various laser options available for your particular condition and to plan a personalized laser treatment.
After care
Laser treatment is usually considered to be a safer treatment modality. If you feel some discomfort at any time after the treatment, a cold compress on the treatment area may be useful.
It is advised to keep the treated area covered and away from sunlight.
Using sunblock is usually helpful too.
For some procedures, longer healing time may be required where the dermatologist will prescribe some ointments and instructions to help heal the area faster.
